The Israelites moved from Elim and came to the desert of Sin, located between Elim and Sinai. This was on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had left Egypt. In the desert the Israelites complained about Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, “If only the Lord had let us die in Egypt. There we sat by our pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted. You brought us out into this desert to let us all starve to death.” God said to Moses, “I will rain bread from heaven for you. Each day the people should go out and gather only what they need for that day, (Exodus 16: 1-4). The Israelites were at it again; it being complaining.  What were they complaining about? Heavenly Showers

Oh yes, it was the quality of food in the wilderness. Apparently they had enjoyed a varied menu of fine dining and cordon bleu cookery in Egypt – as slaves, you understand. And then God had “rescued” them from this high living to slum it in the wilderness. This was another severe case of what seemed to be a deadly disease – selective amnesia, or worse self-deception. How likely is it that slaves were allowed to sit and eat at their leisure in an all you can eat fine dining situation?  The Lord, however, responded to the unjustified and unwarranted complaints about the desert dining experience and promised to rain down bread from heaven on a daily basis. Have you been complaining about some wonderful past that never existed? Are you remembering your slavery to drugs, food, alcohol, painkillers, debt, despair, immorality and ill-health in a favourable light? Are you complaining that God has failed to make provision for you? God has made provision. He rains down His love and His Word on a daily basis. Why does God do this? Why not rain down one lump sum of blessing? God is teaching you that you must rely on Him daily. A life of faith isn’t about trusting in God one day and then living independently of Him the next. A life of faith is one of continual dependence on God. Communicate with God and ask Him for what you need for each day and He will respond by sending you His strength, grace, provision and love, every day.

Do you like taking medicine? Do you wrinkle your nose and ask yourself whether the cure is worse than the disease? Have you been taking bitter mouthfuls of something that is essential to live by, until you just can’t take the bitterness anymore? It was at that point in Israel’s experience that God referred Moses to a tree and told him to throw it into the water. Then, “God made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them, and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.” Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water…
